Prosecutor Objects to Clemency

December 17, 2003  -- Posted at 7:17 AM  CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR  --The prosecutor in Saline County has registered an objection to Governor Huckabee's intention to grant clemency for a convicted murderer.

Don Jeffers is serving a life sentence for killing William Hash in 1980. Prosecutors say Jeffers used his own prosthetic leg to beat Hash to death.

Huckabee on Monday announced his intention to grant Jeffers clemency, starting a public comment period of up to 120 days. Saline County Prosecutor Robert Herzfeld sent Huckabee a letter describing Jeffers as ``a cold-blooded murderer who should never see the outside of a prison.''

Herzfeld says Jeffers has already gotten a break because he was allowed to plead down from capital murder.
