Anti-Consolidation Bill Now on Hold 'Til Monday

December 19, 2003 - Posted at 12:03 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Action on a House bill put forth as an alternative to school consolidation will have to wait until Monday.

Representative Will Bond pointed out that the bill did not have a financial impact statement attached for 24 hours before it came up in the chamber.  Sponsoring Representative Paul Weaver acknowledged the error and said he'd bring the bill back up on Monday.

Bond said he would not have acted had consolidation opponents not blocked a Senate bill backed by Goveror Huckabee.

Bond says the Legislature is spending too much time on the details of proposed reforms and not enough time on funding.  He noted a state Supreme Court order stipulates that the state make funding equitable and adequate.  Legislators have until January 1 to meet the deadline.
