Lyon College breaks ground on new student union

BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) - Lyon College held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for its planned Campus Center. The new facility will replace Edwards Commons, which was destroyed by a fire last October.

A crowd gathered outside what still stands of Edwards Commons to watch donors and other school officials break ground. The new facility will cost $9.5 million.

"You probably wouldn't sign a lease for an apartment for four years that did not have a kitchen, a dining room and a living room, and that's basically what we lost," Lyon president Don Weatherman said.

Weatherman says the college is paying for the new facility using donations and insurance claims. The college is also selling commemorative bricks, which will be placed in the new façade. Students will have to wait to enjoy the new two-story, 43,427 square-foot building. The building will house the dining hall and kitchen, student life offices, meeting spaces, game room, the Scot Shop and a bistro.

"We lost a good rendez-vous point to meet and socialize between classes and play ping-pong and stuff," senior Shane Tucker said.

The construction company has set an ambitious deadline to complete the new Campus Center. Lyon College hopes to have the facility open by Fall 2012.
