Stand-Off in Newark Bank Leads to One Arrest

December 30, 2003 - Posted at 1:58 p.m. CDT

NEWARK, AR - A Newark-area man is in custody at the Independence County Jail today following an armed stand-off in a Newark bank this morning.

Just after 9 a.m., Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the Merchants & Planters Bank in Newark in reference to a man who entered the bank with a gun.

When officers arrived, they found a man armed with a revolver inside the bank, holding one hostage in the banking area and another hostage in a side room.

With the aide of one hostage identified as bank teller Charlene Morrison, deputies were able to make contact with the suspect, identified as 55-year-old Dennis Tarpley.  Tarpley was reportedly upset over a bank loan in which his property was repossessed.

According to a police report, after a conversation with bank officers, Morrison was able to calm the suspect down and talk him into surrendering without further incident.

Charges are pending against Tarpley.
