MissCo Unemployment Rate Down, More New Jobs on the Way

January 5, 2004 - Posted at 3:39 p.m. CDT

HICKMAN, AR - For the first time in nearly three years, Mississippi County does not have Arkansas' highest unemployment rate.

According to the Arkansas Employment Security Department, Mississippi County had an unemployment rate of 11 percent in October, behind the 11.6 percent rate of Woodruff County.  The state's unemployment rate for the month was 6.2 percent.

Meanwhile, a Chicago company says it will hire nearly 25 employees for a new steel processing plant at Hickman.  Ryerson Tull, Inc. expects to be fully operational by the end of March.

According to ArkansasBusiness.com, Ryerson bought the former HuntCo Steel building, which had been idle since early 2002.
