ASU Women's Golf picks up second straight top-three finish

From Arkansas State University

Led by three players finishing among the top 25 individual leaders, the Arkansas State women's golf team completed the Blue Raider Invitational on Tuesday in third place after shooting a combined 908 for the two-day tournament played at the Old Fort Golf Club.

The Red Wolves picked up their second consecutive top-three finish after winning the Lady Red Wolf Classic last week. A-State finished eight strokes behind second-place Lamar, while host Middle Tennessee led the 13-team field with an 886. The Red Wolves finished ahead of five other Sun Belt Conference teams, including ULM, UALR, Troy, South Alabama and Western Kentucky.

A-State improved its standing with each round, moving from seventh place to tied for fourth and then up one additional spot with its final-round 299 that matched its third lowest score this season. The Red Wolves' 908 was also their best three-round score this season.

Competing in its final fall tournament this year, ASU posted an opening-round 307 that was followed by a 302 for the second 18 holes played yesterday. A-State entered today's final round three strokes behind ULM, but was seven strokes better today as it swapped places in the final standings with the Warhawks.

"I'm just really thrilled with this finish in our last tournament of the fall season," said ASU head coach M.J. Desbiens. "I think this was a great team effort with everyone putting together a good score all three rounds to help us pick up a third-place finish. I think this tournament showed that we are continuing to improve, and we're looking forward to a really strong spring."

All five ASU golfers competing as part of the team posted their lowest three-round score of the season. Anna Carling led ASU, finishing tied for fifth place with a combined 223 (74-74-75). She picked up her second straight top-10 finish by matching her final standing at the Lady Red Wolf Classic.

Jennifer Welch picked up her fourth consecutive top-25 finish, ending the tournament tied for 13th place with a 226. She shot a 76 and 77 for the first and second round, respectively, but posted a 73 today to match Jennifer Loiacano for the lowest round of the tournament by an ASU golfer.

Loiacano, who earned medalist honors at the Lady Red Wolf Classic, finished tied for 18th place to collect her third top-25 finish in a row. She recorded a combined 229, which included a second-round 73 yesterday, as she lowered her final total for the fourth straight three-round tournament.

Courtney Manning concluded the tournament tied for 33rd place with a combined 233, which included a season-best 74 for the final round. Manning lowered her score with each round, posting an 81 for the opening 18 holes and a 78 for the second 18.

Sarah Landry shot a combined 237 (78-81-78) to finish tied for 41st place. Competing as an individual for ASU, Clara Tefteller finished in 78th place with a 286 that included rounds of 95, 86 and 87.

The Red Wolves will return to action Feb. 26-28 at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in Charleston, S.C.
