WACO, TX (AP) - Baylor is ranked No. 1 for the first time in the preseason
women's basketball poll by The Associated Press.
Led by junior phenom Brittney Griner, the Lady Bears received 33
of 40 first-place votes Saturday from a national media panel.
Notre Dame drew six first-place votes and is second. Tennessee,
Connecticut and Stanford round out the first five. Defending
champion Texas A&M is sixth, receiving the other first-place vote.
Baylor started last season at No. 2 before ascending to the top
spot in early January for the first time in school history. The
Lady Bears are the first Big 12 school ranked No. 1 to start the
season since Texas in 1985 and 1986.
The Big East placed seven teams in the Top 25 and the Atlantic
Coast Conference five.
