From Williams Baptist College
The Williams Baptist College soccer team has secured its first ever berth in the conference tournament, while the volleyball Eagles are hoping to host their first tournament match following action in both sports last week.
The WBC soccer squad clinched a spot in the tournament with a dramatic, double overtime win at home Saturday against Missouri Baptist. The Eagles' Esteban Piccinini hammered home the winning goal in the second overtime, on an assist from Martin Carmona, and Williams downed MBU 4-3.
The Eagles are now 7-8 on the season, which is the most wins ever for the team. More importantly, Saturday's win moved WBC to 3-4 in the American Midwest Conference, clinching 5th place and securing a spot in the conference tournament. Williams will travel to 4th seeded William Woods University to begin tournament play Saturday.
First-year Eagles coach Shane Stolz remained focused on the future in the wake of his team's accomplishments. "This is a great step for our program. But we know we can get better, and we will get better," Stolz said.
The Williams volleyball team also took care of business last week, taking both ends of a doubleheader at AMC foe Stephens College. The Lady Eagles took the first match in five sets, 19-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-9, 15-9, before sweeping the second contest, 25-14, 25-16, 25-18.
WBC is 24-8 overall and 9-7 in the AMC, putting them in a tie for fourth in the conference. The Lady Eagles have only non-conference matches left in the regular season, but other AMC contests will determine whether a first round conference tournament match is played at Williams next week.
"We have the opportunity to host a conference tournament match, which would be a first for our program and which is one of our team goals. That would be another big accomplishment in what has been a really good season for us," said WBC volleyball coach Eric Newell.
The Lady Eagles play Lyon College Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7:00 p.m. in WBC's Southerland-Mabee Center. Williams will also play host to a tri-match Thursday with Mid-Continent University and Crowley's Ridge College, starting at 5:00 p.m.
The AMC volleyball tournament begins next Tuesday, Nov. 8. The Williams squad will know after conference matches this weekend whether it will play the first round at home or on the road.
