PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT)- Residents of Greene County are now able to vote on whether or not to expand the county jail with a sales tax increase.
Early voting started Tuesday to decide on the proposal. Cities in Greene County have made an agreement that if the new jail is approved, the cities would pay one dollar per day, per prisoner to fund future jail growth.
The preliminary cost of the project is estimated to be around 14 million dollars. According to Project Coordinator Dave Tierney, the agreement between the cities and the county is the most cost-effective solution to the jail's overcrowding problem.
The special election will take place November 8th.
