POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) – Two people havebeen arrested in Poplar Bluff after police say they cashed thousands of dollarsin forged checks.
According to Poplar Bluff Police, Hailey D. Coston is chargedwith four counts of forgery and Lonnie C. Hamilton is charged with three countsof forgery. According to the probable cause statement, Coston was thebookkeeper for Northside Nutrition Center Board.
According to the bank, 31 forged checks totaling $22,812.45 hadpassed, and the checks were cashed at several locations over the past severalmonths.
Police found surveillance video from Wal-Mart and identifiedCoston and Hamilton allegedly cashing checks.
Police questioned Coston who told them she wrote the first checkto help pay and bill and it snowballed from there as she continued to paybills, even paying her neighbor's electric bill.
Coston told police she asked Hamilton to cash the checks and splitthe money with her.
Hamilton told police he would cash the checks the split the moneywith Coston, according to the probable cause statement.
