LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Senate today passed legislation authorizing the payment of $10 million for a statewide facilities assessment of public school buildings. The bill includes a stipulation that legislators can spend only $3.8 million for startup costs now. The rest will have to be approved for spending by the 2005 General Assembly.
The facilities study is part of the Legislature's response to a state Supreme Court order to overhaul Arkansas' unconstitutional public school system.
Upgrading facilities and equipment is expected to be the largest financial obligation of the state in response to the court ruling.
