Self Defense 101: Aikido

It's the last thing you want to think about - being the victim of an attack. And it can be a real concern for women. According to the Department of Justice, a woman is attacked every 2 minutes in the U.S. and a violent crime occurs every 6 seconds. It's startling to hear, but there are ways to protect yourself.

Jump on "YouTube" and you'll find all kinds of video clips showing how to protect yourself in the event you are attacked. They all display different types of martial arts as a form of self defense.

We start out by stretching out. It's important to be flexible and limber. Next, we move onto the basics of Aikido. You'll learn how to fall, roll and throw your attacker to the ground.

Aikido is not about attacking, but being in harmony with your attacker. It's about moving the conflict to another place.

A couple of other tips to stay safe: Be aware of your surroundings. Skip checking your cell phone for texts when walking to your car. Attackers look for people who are vulnerable, so be alert.
