Residents go green for America Recycles Day

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Jonesboro residents celebrated America Recycles Day by doing just that. Several vendors accepted a wide range of items for reuse, resale or recycling on Saturday.

The environment committee of the Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted the event at the ASU Regional Farmer's Market. Suddelink Communications collected consumer electronics through its "eCycling Initiative."

"All of our vendors have had good turnout," said Troy Smith, community media specialist. "We've all taken in a lot of items and definitely helped to take a lot of those items out of the landfill."

Other vendors included Habitat for Humanity, Abilities Unlimited, Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, MARCK Recycling and Legacy Landfill.

"We try to raise awareness to get the community to do the right thing and to keep those items out of the landfill and just make (Jonesboro) a better place to live," Smith added.

The Jonesboro Chamber sponsors two recycling events each year – one in the fall, the other in spring.
