Independence Co police shoot fleeing suspect who fired rifle

BATESVILLE, AR (AP) - Arkansas State Police say a man who fled from Batesville officers and fired a rifle at them after crashing his car was shot and wounded by police.
Independence County sheriff's deputies were called at about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday to a Batesville residence where a man was allegedly threatening to harm people in the home.
State police say 46-year-old James Chapman Perkins of Newark left the home in a vehicle and was spotted by Trooper David Jones. Perkins rammed Jones' cruiser and fled, chased by Jones and other law offices.
Perkins drove into a ditch near state Highways 233 and 69, then pointed and fired the rifle at officers. Jones and other officers returned fire, wounding Perkins.
Police say Perkins is being held at a Little Rock hospital pending formal charges.
