Brian Boyer's Red Wolves fall at Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (ASU) — Arkansas State got 18 points from junior Quinishia McDowell and 10 from sophomore Jane Morrill, but turnovers and rebounding plagued the Red Wolves (1-2) in a 70-48 loss to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-3) Tuesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa.

Arkansas State committed 30 turnovers on the night and was out-rebounded 48-33 by Tulsa, including a 26-10 deficit on the offensive glass.

"I told the team in the locker room before the game that Tulsa would take more chances than the other teams we had played, just shooting through and gambling," said ASU head coach Brian Boyer.  "I warned them not to panic because it's no more pressure than we see in practice every day, but we just didn't handle it.  We never got the ball into Jane or attacked off the dribble.  It seemed like we played the entire game outside the three-point line."

"I thought ‘Q' played well," added Boyer.  "She's got energy, she's out there talking, fighting and trying.  It's good to get a little scoring out of her as well.  We know she's capable and tonight was one of those nights for her."

Arkansas State led 5-2 in the early going, getting a three-pointer from junior Ashley Olvera and a layup from McDowell in the opening minute.  Tulsa tied the game on a three-pointer from guard Taleya Mayberry, then took a 7-5 lead on a bucket from guard Taylor Hooker.  Arkansas State regained the lead at 10-9 on a steal from sophomore Lunden Roberts, but a jumper from forwardTiffani Couisnard put the Golden Hurricane back on top at 11-10 and ASU trailed the rest of the way.

McDowell led Arkansas State at the break with 11 points.  The Red Wolves shot 47.4 percent in the first half but suffered from 14 turnovers and a 20-14 deficit on the boards and trailed 33-25 at intermission.

Tulsaopened the second half with a 6-0 run to go up 39-25.  The Red Wolves managed to cut the deficit to eight when senior Meghan Lewis scored on a layup with 16:35 to play to make it 39-31, but Tulsa answered with a 7-1 run over the next two minutes and the Red Wolves never recovered.

Olvera led ASU on the boards with eight rebounds, followed by McDowell with seven.  Mayberry led Tulsa with 27 points and Couisnard finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Red Wolves will now return to Jonesboro for a Nov. 27 matchup with the Toledo Rockets.  Sunday's tipoff at the ASU Convocation Center is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
