Newport student back in school after bullet incident

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - A Newport High School student is back in school after allegedly discharging a bullet in the boys' restroom.
Superintendent Larry Bennett said the male student was suspended for two days and was brought back to campus to be "fair to everybody."
Bennett said the school now needs help investigating the incident. He has asked the Newport Police Department to get involved. Chief Michael Scudder says the school asked police to give the student a lie detector test.
School officials have not gotten much information from the student so far. He is accused of throwing a .22 caliber short shell onto the boys' restroom floor, which caused the bullet to discharge. No one was injured during the incident, and Bennett has reassured parents that no gun was brought on campus.
