University of Denver sophomore, Chris Udofia, was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Udofia helped lead the Pioneers to a pair of victories last week and improve the Pioneers to 6-1 overall.
One of the wins last week was a 67-54 defeat of Utah State that snapped the Aggies' 33-game home winning streak, the third longest in the country. Udofia scored 15 points – including his own 8-0 run over a four-minute stretch late in the game that sealed the win, while adding six rebounds, three assists and a steal.
The versatile Udofia followed it up with 10 points, five blocked shots, five assists and two steals in a 62-45 win over Texas Southern.
In the two games, Udofia was 9-for-18 (50.0 percent) from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line, while turning the ball over only twice in the two games, giving him a 4.0 assists-to-turnover ratio.
Through six games this season, Udofia is averaging 13.6 points, 3.1 blocks, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 0.9 steals per game, while shooting 50.7 percent from the field.
On Wednesday, the Pioneers will host Iona, which is currently ranked No. 3 in the Mid-Major Top 25 and No. 6 on ESPN's Mid-Major Power 15 - DU checks in at No. 7 in the ESPN Mid-Major Power 15. Denver has never faced the Gaels (6-1), who are leading the nation with 92.0 points per game and 13th in the NCAA with a 50.3 field goal percentage.
The Pioneers will then take a break before traveling to Greeley, Colo. for a match-up with Northern Colorado on Dec. 14.
