Jail Administrator, Two Others Fired in White County

February 4, 2004 - Posted at 2:43 p.m. CDT

SEARCY, AR - The White County Jail administrator and two jailers have been fired over problems at the jail.  Sheriff Pat Garrett says two other jail employees have been disciplined.

Garrett fired Captain Kathy Spurlock, the jail administrator, and Elaine Crankshaw, a jailer, last week.  He also fired jailer Dennis Curtwright on another recent occasion.

Sheriff's officials say Spurlock didn't notify them about problems at the jail soon enough.  For example, the sheriff learned of a January 19 escape while he was eating in a restaurant and someone asked him about the commotion at the jail that morning.

Officials say Crankshaw was fired because she was uncooperative during an internal investigation and she discussed the investigation with Spurlock after she was told not to.

Records show Curtwright was fired because he kissed an inmate on her cheek, brought her breakfast from a fast-food restaurant, and asked her to write him letters expressing her feelings.
