LITTLE ROCK, AR - A Web site that charges people $9.95 per hour for voter registration is the target of a consumer advisory from Attorney General Mike Beebe and Secretary of State Charlie Daniels.
The two held a news conference at the state Capitol today to drive home the point that registering to vote is free and residents don't need a pay service to get on the rolls.
Beebe said his office does not have evidence that the site is breaking the law. But Beebe expressed concerns about possible identity theft, since people using the site to register would be providing personal information, as well as credit card numbers to pay the site's fees.
Daniels said there are legitimate sites on the Web where people can register to vote, or that provide links to voter-registration sites, but where no fees are charged.
