71-year-old found bloodied, incoherent in park

BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – The Baxter County Sheriff's Department is continuing to investigate a beating that happened in Pigeon Creek Park off Highway 201 north.

According to police, the department received a 911 call at 10:19 p.m. from a driver who said he found a bloodied man lying on the ground in the park. Officers say they arrived to find an incoherent 71-year-old Herman R. Hackworth, of Mountain Home, lying approximately 30 feet from his white minivan.

Sometime later, police say they spoke with Adam M. Mudgett, 27 about the incident after his wife called in to report a fight that had happened in the same area.. According to Investigator Trey Edings, Mudgett said Hackworth had approached him and started a conversation, but after a few minutes, an altercation broke out. The investigator says Mudgett then said he hit Hackworth two or three times causing him to fall and then went home.

According to Sheriff John Montgomery, Hackworth was taken by ambulance to Baxter Regional Medical Center and later flown by Air-EVac Life Team to Cox Hospital in Springfield, Missouri with serious head injuries.

The investigation continues to pinpoint the cause of the altercation and possible charges.
