Red Wolves lead early, but fall to NIU

MOBILE, AL (KAIT) - The Arkansas State Red Wolves lead early but eventually lost the lead and never regained it as they fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies 38-20.

Martel Moore led the Huskies in yardage with 224 total yards, catching eight passes with a touchdown.

Arkansas State was plagued by five turnovers including three interceptions by Ryan Aplin.

The scoring started with a 32 yard field goal by Bryan Davis with 11:22 left in the first quarter that put Arkansas State in the lead 3-0. The Red Wolves would also get three more off the foot of Bryan Davis with a 36 yarder with 7:44 left in the first.

Arkansas State looked to be pulling away early after a Quarterback keeper from Ryan Aplin and an extra point by Brian Davis pushed the lead to 13-0 with 5 minutes left in the first frame. But a 9 yard pass from Chandler Harnish to Perez Ashford along with an extra point by Mathew Sims cut the Red Wolves lead to 13-7 at the end of the first.

The second quarter proved to be a momentum shifter in the game in the favor of the huskies. After Harnish left the game with a leg injury, back-up QB Jordan Lynch scored on 3 yard keeper to tie things up at 13. The Huskies would take the lead with an extra point and lead it 14-13 with 4:49 left in the half.

The Huskies would add to late second half scoring with another touchdown by running back Jamal Womble from 1 yard out as time expired in the 2nd Quarter. The Huskies would take a 21-13 lead into the half.

Chandler Harnish returned to action in the second half for NIU as they picked up where they left off. Quickly in the third quarter Chandler Harnish connected with Martel Moore for a 43 yard bomb to make it 28-13 lead for the Huskies.

The fourth quarter started off strong as well for Northern Illinois after a 22 yard field goal with 13:34 left in the game made it 31-13 lead for NIU. But Arkansas State had a little fight left in them and Aplin connected with Taylor Stockemer on a 16 yard completion and after an extra point the deficit was cut to 31-20.

But NIU wasn't done, Ryan Aplin threw a pass that was picked off by Dechan Durante and returned for a 36 yard touchdown. After the extra point by Sims NIU extended the lead for the final time and would win the ball game by the final of 38-20.

Northern Illinois improved to 11-3 on the season with the win while Arkansas State fell to 10-3 on the season with the loss.
