Region 8 clothing closet needs clothes

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - An organization that has been working hard to provide professional attire to the women of Region 8, now needs your help. The Woman's Discovery Center in Jonesboro gives entire wardrobes to women who find themselves in urgent situations.

"Shopping at the closet, for a woman, does have a distinct impact on her life," Executive Director of the Woman's Discovery Center, Faye Cox, said. "It gives her a boost in her self esteem and that little boost helps her when she walks into a job interview and she looks her best. When she goes to work, she can know she is as nicely dressed as her coworkers. And for women with children who have been hit really hard, she can wear something that's not threadbare clothes and spruce up her wardrobe."

Cox says everything they have managed to accomplish over the years has been through donations of others. "The closet is for professional clothing for women. They can come and get it at no charge to them. And it is the outgrowth of the generosity of the women of the Jonesboro community."

Right now, depending on what size you are, women who come to the Woman's Discovery Center for help may not find it. "We have a current, pretty desperate need. Although we have a lot of generous women who donate to the closet, we tend to run low on larger women's sizes."

Volunteer Kristen Hubble has been working at the Woman's Discovery Center for six months. "We are really in need of some plus size clothes and what we have here are professional clothes," Hubble said. "So, anything that's appropriate for the office. Be it slacks, dresses, suits or skirts. Our immediate need, right now, is 16 and above."

Cox says they have also discovered there is a need to provide women with shapers and these items must be new. "As you're shopping the sales, if women would please look at the shapers and possibly donate one or more that would be very helpful to these women."

Cox says when they first opened the closet; they had no idea how large the need was in the Region 8 area. "The need for this closet in this area has been amazing to us. We first started it knowing there must be a need, but it has been overwhelming. We have anywhere from three to five donations a week, but we have just as many or more shoppers to match that."

All clothing is free and shopping sessions are kept private and anonymous. Donations made to the Woman's Discovery Center are also tax deductible. For more information about how you can help, log onto their website.
