SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas woman says her son and daughter have survived a luxury cruise ship crash off the coast of Italy.
Justin Baines, his sister, Sarah Plath, and their spouses were aboard the Costa Concordia when the ship hit a reef Friday, killing at least five people.
Plath told her parents and KATV by phone that she, her husband, her brother and sister-in-law held hands as the climbed through the dark, tilting ship. She says the vessel sank quickly, and since there were no more lifeboats available they decided to jump.
Searcy resident Donna Baines told KLRT-TV the couples swim about 100 yards to a rock. She says she's thankful that her children are safe and are proud of them.
Donna Baines didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment Sunday.
