GREENE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - A Greene County woman is behind bars tonight after shooting her husband in the face with a small caliber handgun. Region 8 News talked with Scott Pillow with Arkansas State Police, who's an investigator in the case, to understand what exactly happened.
It's not how anybody would want to wake up. "The victim was asleep when he was shot," said Pillow. According to officials with the Arkansas State Police, around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning Laura Jean Ellis allegedly shot her husband in the face while he was sleeping at the couple's home in Lafe. "Basically, it was domestic issues," said Pillow.
But what's interesting, authorities weren't even notified about the incident until 2 hours after it happened. The call didn't come from the suspect or the victim, but the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould reporting a individual had suffered a gun shot wound.
"Deputies responded to the Medical Center. Once they were there, they were able to speak with the victim where it was determined that this wasn't a self-inflicted gun shot wound," said Pillow.
From there, State Police and the investigators with the Greene County Sheriff's Department began to process the crime scene and conduct witness and suspect interviews, which gave police probable cause to charge Ellis with Battery in the 1st Degree.
"She has given a statement indicating her involvement with the shooting," said Pillow.
Pillow says Ellis does not have a previous criminal record and is currently being held at Greene County Jail. "She has a temporary bond of 250-thousand dollars and is awaiting her first appearance on charges of battery in the first degree," said Pillow.
Investigators are currently working to complete the case file to send the Prosecutor's Office. The victim was transported to the Med in Memphis, and according to authorities is in stable condition.
