JONESBORO, AR (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team opened the 2012 season with a 6-1 victory over Tennessee-Martin at Allen Park on Sunday.
The Red Wolves lost just one match in single's competition and picked up a pair of wins from freshmen Mariana Rong and Tamara Slijepcevic. Rong defeated Jodie Tilley 6-3, 6-1, while Slijepcevic defeated Ivon Simic 6-1, 6-1.
In other single's action, sophomore Janie Nowland defeated Anna Marie Herbold 6-1, 6-4, while junior Ioana Teu defeated Jessica Silva 7-6, 3-6, 10-7. Senior Ceara Howey also recorded a point for ASU with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Katie McCall.
Johanie Van Zyl picked up UTM's lone point with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory over Biljana Miloshevska.
"We played great in singles," ASU tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht said. "It is always kind of nerve racking when you play your first match after having worked on so many things for so long and then have to go out there and put them into an actual match. Overall I was pleased with how we played, but we certainly have some areas to work on as well."
In doubles competition Rong and Teu defeated Alice Laing and Herbold 9-7, while the pairing of Howy and Miloshevksa defeated Simic and McCall 8-2. In the No. 2 doubles match UTM's pairing of Tiley and Van Zyl defeated Nowland and Slijepcevic 8-2.
ASU will return to the courts Feb. 3-4 with matches against Denver and Colorado State.
