It can happen in an instant – a child choking. Would you know how to react?
According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 10,000 children are taken to the ER each year for choking injuries. Those under five years old are especially at high risk. And while no one wants to find themselves in this terrifying situation, it's imperative for caregivers to know basic first aid.
Dr. Tom Tallman of the Cleveland Clinic says, "It's something that everyone should be familiar with. If you're at home and you have young kids, you've got to make sure that's something you can treat."
So what to do if you think a child is choking?
First, call 911. If they are older than one and can't cough or breathe, use the Heimlich maneuver. For those younger than one, lay them face down on your forearm and point the head downward. Give five quick hits between the shoulder blades.
If the object does not pop out, turn the baby face up and support the head. Place two fingers in the middle of the breastbone and give five quick thrusts. If the victim stops breathing or becomes blue, start child or infant CPR.
While everyone should be prepared in case of emergency, prevention is key.
