DENVER, CO (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team lost their first Sun Belt Conference match of the seasons with a 6-1 defeat to Denver Saturday night at the Colorado Athletic Club – Monaco.
Freshman Tamara Slijepcevic earned ASU's only point on the night with a 6-2, 4-6, 15-13 victory over Elena Najera in the No. 2 singles match. In the No. 1 singles match ASU (1-2) freshman Mariana Rong lost to Sophia Bergner in a third-set tie breaker 10-3. Rong won the first set 6-4, but then lost the second set 7-6 to force the tiebreak.
In the No. 3 singles match Caroline Schnell defeated Janie Nowland 6-3, 6-1 while Biljana Miloshevska lost to Emma Isberg 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match. Ioana Teu lost to Steffi Rath 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match, while Natalie Dunn defeated Ceara Howey 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 6 singles match.
Denver (5-0) won all three of the doubles matches as well. Bergner and Rath defeated Rong and Teu 8-3, while Isberg and Najara defeated Nowland and Slijepcevic 8-1. In the No. 3 doubles match Schnell and Dunn defeated Miloshevska and Howey 8-4.
ASU will return the courts Saturday, Feb. 11 against Southeast Missouri State. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Allen Park.
