Southeast Missouri Teacher Resigns After Allegedly Taping Student to Desk

MARCH 3, 2004 - Posted at 10:31 a.m. CDT

ORAN, MO - The parents of a 14-year-old southeast Missouri boy remain angry over an incident in which their son was duct-taped to his desk and had his mouth covered with tape.

Larry Brindley says his son, Tommy, has had breathing problems and nearly suffocated before freeing himself.

It happened February 19 at a school in Oran.

Tommy Brindley was in detention when he began acting up.  The teacher, a 21-year veteran of the district, allegedly directed two students to help her tape the boy to his desk.

Superintendent Tom Anderson says he immediately confronted the teacher, though she was allowed to work for two more days before resigning the following week.

Larry Brindley is upset that the teacher was not fired immediately.  The family is still considering legal action.
