JONESBORO, AR - The Arkansas State Highway Commission has opened bids for improvements to a roadway in Craighead County.

According to Commission Chairman Buddy Benafield, the purpose of the project is to re-surface 4.3 miles of Highway 1 in Poinsett and Craighead counties.  The project will extend from just south of Jonesboro southward into Poinsett County.  The apparent low bidder was Atlas Asphalt of Jonesboro with a bid of $529,012.60.

"Resurfacing this section of Highway 1 will mean safer travel for motorists and insure a good driving surface for years to come," Benafield said.

Benafield says construction on the project could begin in six to eight weeks, weather permitting.  Construction should be completed by late summer of 2004.
