Federal judges won't halt east Arkansas Senate primary

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - A three-judge federal panel says it won't halt the May 22 primary for an east Arkansas Senate seat as it considers a lawsuit claiming that a redistricting board improperly lowered the black vote in the district.

The judges on Friday denied an injunction to postpone the Democratic primary for state Sen. Jack Crumbly's seat.

Crumbly and a group of east Arkansas residents have sued the Board of Apportionment and claim that it diluted the black vote in his district.

Crumbly had asked the court to postpone the primary and order the board to draw new lines.

The judges' order said it was still weighing the merits of the case, but that it cannot postpone the primary.

The order noted that early voting began Monday.
