Trumann hires private investigator to review police chief

Posted: Updated:

TRUMANN, AR (KAIT) – Trumann Mayor Sheila Walters told Region 8 News Tuesday the city has hired a former Arkansas State trooper to investigate Police Chief Tony Rusher. While the circumstances of the investigation have not been released, Walters said she wanted to hire an officer who was not familiar with the department.

Walters said Phil Carter of Jonesboro was hired Friday, February 17 to look into the police chief. Walters said her office launched an internal investigation. Carter, a retired state trooper, said he hoped to have his investigation complete within the week.

Carter told Region 8 News Tuesday morning he's interviewing witnesses and putting his report together. Once it's finalized, he will turn his findings over to Walters.

Walters said once she receives the report, she will determine further action.

Rusher, who was hired as police chief in 2009 after the death of former Police Chief Larry Blagg, has been temporarily replaced. He's been put on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

Assistant Police Chief Gary Henry has been appointed Acting Police Chief pending the results of the investigation.

Region 8 News will continue to track this story and bring you the latest details as soon as they become available.
