Liquid face lift restores collagen

Karen Behan is not looking for a dramatic make-over. She simply wants to restore some of the body and fullness to her face.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Adair Blackledge at Blackledge Face Center suggested Karen try one of the latest cosmetic procedures called Sculptra; or slangy, the Liquid Face Lift.

It's more than just an injection. It's a poly lactic acid that triggers the production of a patients collagen.

"This is actually a filler that is going to peak at a year and last anywhere from two to five years," Dr. Blackledge said. "We're actually just filling in areas and building up the face because as all of us age, we start to lose volume in our face. It's almost become like a molding class where you just kind of mold it into the hollows."

What impresses Dr. Blackledge about this injectable is the reactive process over time.

"It stays around for about nine months in the body and then it dissolves," Dr. Blackledge said. "So even though it dissolves in nine months, you'll actually get this collagen building response in your face. So it's actually not the stuff that producing the volume in your face and in the lines, it's your body's own build up around the stuff."

Sculptra is the perfect choice for Karen, who says her life is centered on much deeper commitments than looking for an extreme make-over.

"Spirituality is first," Karen said. "I'm happily married and have a wonderful family. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to look a little bit better."

The possible side effects of Sculptra are redness and inflammation.

Sculptra costs $600 per session and usually requires 2 or 3 treatments.
