Unregistered sex offender caught hiding near the Mississippi River

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) - Police and deputies in Pemiscot County arrest unregistered sex offender hiding in a hole near the Mississippi River.

According to the Caruthersville Police Department, officers were dispatched to 308 West 4th Street Wednesday evening in response to a possible sex offender living at the residence.  Police say the 40-year-old white male failed to register with the Sex Offenders Registry. 

While at the residence, police say the man fled on foot.  A Caruthersville citizen told police a man fitting the description of the suspect was running along the edge of the Mississippi River.  Caruthersville Police and Pemiscot County Sheriff's deputies searched the area and found the man hiding in a deep hole under tree limbs near the river's edge.

The man is being held in the in the Pemiscot County Justice Center until formal charges of failing to register as a sex offender and resisting arrest can be filed.
