Jury recommends life for Okla. man in baby's death

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A LeFlore County jury has recommended life in prison for a Howe man it convicted in the death of his former fiancée's baby.

The panel deliberated more than three hours before finding Aaron Hinson guilty of first-degree murder on Friday.

According to the Southwest Times Record (http://bit.ly/w4wtPN), prosecutors argued that 4-month-old Aiden Furney had skull fractures, active bleeding around his brain, bruises and a ligature mark around his neck when he died May 11, 2009.

Hinson's attorney, Peter Astor, argued that prosecutors hadn't proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Hinson inflicted Aiden's injuries.

The baby's mother, Kayla Furney, is charged with enabling child abuse by injury.

Hinson's father, Shawn Hinson, declined comment.

Associate District Judge Bill Welch ordered a pre-sentence investigation and scheduled Aaron Hinson's formal sentencing for April 3.
