Detective fatally shoots man in NW Arkansas

FARMINGTON, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State Police and the Washington County Sheriff's Office are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting.

Sheriff Tim Helder says the shooting occurred when sheriff's detectives went to a residence near Farmington on Monday to conduct a follow-up investigation of a reported sexual assault on a minor. He says detectives were trying to get a man at the residence to come outside when the man said he needed to go back inside.

The man was later identified as 38-year-old Joshua Thomas.

Helder says detective L. Scott McAfee told him to wait, but Thomas went back inside and slammed the door. When the detective knocked, Thomas opened the door and was told he was under arrest.

Helder says the man swung a crowbar at McAfee, who shot him once.
