Benedictine Sisters celebrate 125 years

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)-The Holy Angels Convent in Jonesboro held a very special celebration on Wednesday.

The Feast of St. Benedict, a mass and luncheon, took place to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the "Jonesboro Benedictines" arriving from Switzerland in 1887.

Visitors from the original convent in Switzerland made the trip to Jonesboro, along with two Abbots and representatives from different monasteries and convents throughout the United States.

Sister Henrietta Hockle has been a member of the Benedictine Order for 66 years.

She says it means a lot to have these people come to see them from so far away.

"Oh, it means a lot," Hockle said. "It means a great affirmation and I am so happy and proud. I've never regretted joining the Benedictine order."

Sister Henrietta says she joined the Benedictine Order years ago for the same reason the sisters traveled here in 1887, to serve.

"We want to share God's blessings," Hockle said. "God has been so good to us that we have had 125 years of Northeast Arkansas, our sisters presence. They came to serve."

The celebration consisted of a number of different day long activities.

Tours of the convent were given before mass and then a lunch held with guests afterward.
