Florida Atlantic names Melissa Dawson interim athletic director

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - Florida Atlantic is not renewing the contract of athletic director Craig Angelos, and has named Melissa Dawson as the Owls' interim AD.

Dawson says university president Mary Jane Saunders told her of the decision on Tuesday. The university released a statement about the move Wednesday.

Dawson says FAU will conduct a national search for a permanent replacement.

Angelos oversaw FAU's transition to the top tier of college football, along with the construction of a 30,000-seat on-campus stadium that opened last fall, and the hiring of Carl Pelini as Howard Schnellenberger's replacement as football coach last year. He was named FAU's athletic director in 2003.
