Construction to Begin this Spring on Three Hydroelectric Plants on White River

MARCH 20, 2004 - Posted at 3:01 p.m. CDT

BATESVILLE, AR - Construction is to begin in April or May on three hyrdoelectric plants at lock and dams on the White River in Independence County, officials say.

The county plans to sell the power generated from the plants to nearby Clarksville.  They are to be online by 2006.

Hugh Harrison, who manages Clarksville's water and electric utility, said the generators will account for 30 to 35 percent of the city's electricity.

Independence County expects to earn $225,000 in the first year the plants operate and officials said they plan to use those profits to pay for maintenance and operations.

Other profits will be split among the county, Batesville and Lyon College, with the city and college getting 15 percent each.
