Arkansas officer shot in leg during standoff

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A Fayetteville police officer was shot in the leg during a standoff near the University of Arkansas.

Sgt. Craig Stout says campus police were attempting to stop a man, who fled in his vehicle to an apartment complex late Saturday. Stout says the man pulled out a weapon as Fayetteville officers approached the residence then went back inside.

When he emerged again, he fired at the officers, striking one of them. Officers returned fire and the man went back inside the apartment.

Stout says police contacted the man, who stepped outside the apartment unarmed and was taken into custody.

The officer's wound was not life-threatening. His name wasn't immediately released.

Arkansas' public education system is good, really good. But it took a step back this past week when a joint legislative committee voted to remove journalism classes as a required elective in all Arkansas schools.
