BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -  A man living in Costa Rica has been brought back to Baxter County to serve time in jail and pay fines of over $30,000.

According to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery, Michael K. Sanders owes money for court ordered fines, court costs, fees and victim restitution.  He was arrested on an outstanding felony bench warrant for contempt of court in Costa Rica by U.S. Marshals in March.  Sanders was then taken to Houston, Texas where Baxter County Sheriff's deputies brought him back to the county.

Sheriff Montgomery says Sanders was last arrested in August 1998 on felony theft charges and was convicted.

Sanders was sentenced in those theft charges as well as the following charges:

  • Defrauding Secured Creditors, 1993
  • Hot Check Violations, 1995
  • Theft by Deception, 1996

Sheriff Montgomery states most of the theft charges involved Sanders taking money to purchase parts and make repairs to outboard motors, which he never did.

Police say Sanders was ordered to pay restitution of over $25,000 to 30 separate victims in Baxter County.  He was also order to pay $1,150 in fines, $950 in court costs and additional fees totaling $720.

Sanders did make some payments in 1998, but soon quit paying.

In 2010, a bench warrant was issued against Sanders and it was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system.

On March 29, Sander plead to the contempt of court charge and was sentenced to serve 178 days in the Baxter County Detention Center.

After spending time in jail, Sanders is ordered to begin paying his $30,234.12 in restitution and fines.
