BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - A man living in Costa Rica hasbeen brought back to Baxter County to serve time in jail and pay fines of over$30,000.
According to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery, Michael K.Sanders owes money for court ordered fines, court costs, fees and victimrestitution. He was arrested on an outstanding felony bench warrant forcontempt of court in Costa Rica by U.S. Marshals in March. Sanderswas then taken to Houston, Texas where Baxter County Sheriff's deputies broughthim back to the county.
Sheriff Montgomery says Sanders was last arrested in August 1998on felony theft charges and was convicted.
Sanders was sentenced in those theft charges as well as thefollowing charges:
- Defrauding Secured Creditors, 1993
- Hot Check Violations, 1995
- Theft by Deception, 1996
Sheriff Montgomery states most ofthe theft charges involved Sanders taking money to purchase parts and makerepairs to outboard motors, which he never did.
Police say Sanders was ordered topay restitution of over $25,000 to 30 separate victims in Baxter County. He was also order to pay $1,150 in fines, $950 in court costs andadditional fees totaling $720.
Sanders did make some payments in1998, but soon quit paying.
In 2010, a bench warrant was issuedagainst Sanders and it was entered into the National Crime InformationCenter (NCIC) system.
On March 29, Sander plead to thecontempt of court charge and was sentenced to serve 178 days in the BaxterCounty Detention Center.
After spending time in jail, Sandersis ordered to begin paying his $30,234.12 in restitution andfines.
