JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)-Abilities Unlimited of Jonesboro, Inc. hosted a grand opening for the new and improved location in downtown Paragould on Thursday.
The Paragould location contains a consignment boutique, children's consignment boutique, thrift store and adult development programs
The Director of Marketing for Abilities Unlimited, Heather Holmes, says they have a little bit of everything to offer someone.
"We have everything," Holmes said. "From clothing to home decor, furniture appliances. And thrift is the new 'in'. A lot of people don't think of a thrift store as trendy and upscale, but once you come in our store you'll notice it's a lot more than that."
Holmes says it's taken a lot of hard work and effort from a large group of people to get to the grand opening.
"We had our grand opening for the Unlimited about a year ago," Holmes said. "Since then we have just been busy, busy, busy at work trying to get out of our old facility downtown. So, the staff and team here have worked tremendously hard over the past year to get everything in order."
Abilities Unlimited is a non profit organization that works to help those with disabilities.
This is a fact that Holmes says many people are unaware of.
"The heart of everything we do is to serve our consumers," Holmes said. "Our consumers are clients with developmental disabilities and that's our mission. To improve the living and working conditions and opportunities of persons with disabilities. Everything you see in our store that's been donated has provided a job opportunity for someone with a disability and a lot of people don't know that. They just know us from the stores, but we're so much more than that."
Paragould resident David Grim says he was impressed when he discovered how large the new store was and the wide variety of items available.
He says he's proud to know he's helping someone else when he shops there.
"When you go to a yard sale or a flea market," Grim said. "Sure, that's an actual business and someone's profiting from that. But this is actually going to a better cause, obviously, and it's probably going to do more long term not just for those guys but for the city of Paragould."
Abilities Unlimited currently serves three hundred people in 18 counties.
Their services include adult development, work activity, and even physical, occupational and speech therapy programs
Holmes says many people also don't realize the impact their donations have on their organization.
Every item that comes to them is a job to someone else.
"When an item comes in, most times it touches six different hands," Holmes said. "That's six different people with a disability that have a job opportunity that probably wouldn't. Our goal is to avoid an institution and provide opportunities for individuals to live out in the community and be active citizens of the community and to participate in everyday activities that you or I would."
Abilities Unlimited is located at 121 North Second Street in Paragould.
They are open Monday through Saturday from ten to six.
There are also 24 hour donation bins located behind the store.
Abilities Unlimited Incorporated currently employees four hundred people.
