Forrest City alum Barrett Astin added to midseason NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List

FAYETTEVILLE ( – Arkansas sophomore right-handed pitcher Barrett Astin has been named to the midseason watch list for the 2012 NCBWA Stopper of the Year, as announced on Thursday afternoon.

Astin is one of 45 players named to the midseason watch list for the award, which goes to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.

A native of Forrest City, Ark., Astin has pitched in 15 games, 12 out of the bullpen, and has compiled a 2-3 record with a team-leading six saves and a 1.25 ERA. In 36 innings of work this season, Astin has giving up 10 runs, just five earned, on 27 hits and has struck out 42 batters. Opposing hitters are batting just .201 against Astin.

Astin has pitched in 42 games in his career, with 36 of those appearances coming in relief, and has a 7-5 record with nine saves. Astin has thrown 95.2 innings in his collegiate career and has allowed just 84 hits, while striking out 99.

Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts around the country. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 6, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional tournament competition.

The NCBWA's All-America committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced during the 2012 College World Series.

Astin and the 17th-ranked Arkansas baseball team are back in action this weekend at No. 22 Ole Miss. The weekend series begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The series continues on Saturday at 4 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
