Sheriff Expects To Complete Beating Investigation Today

APRIL 7, 2004 - Posted at 7:32 a.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR - Craighead County Sheriff Jack McCann says he expects to wrap up his investigation as soon as today into the beating of a suspect.

48-year-old Terry O'Neil of Brookland was beaten March 31.  The probe involves four deputies, six jailers, two state police officers and a Brookland police officer.  Four jailers and the Brookland officer have been suspended.

The state police is conducting its own investigation.

O'Neil told authorities that law officers shocked him several times with an electrical stun gun and punched him at his home.  He said several jailers kicked him at the jail.  Officers also assaulted and shocked his girlfriend.  McCann said no matter the outcome of the investigation, O'Neil didn't deserve the beating.
