Considering the growth of Jonesboro since that time, the Region 8 StormTEAM tracks the path of the 1968 twister to see what businesses, schools, and neighborhoods would be affected if the same storm struck once again.
Actually, the Jonesboro tornado in 1968, believed to be an F4, tore through much of NE Arkansas, hitting the City of Jonesboro about 10 p.m. on May 15, 1968. The death toll reached 34 in Jonesboro alone. An F4 twister also struck the Independence community of Oil Trough, leaving 7 dead, and much of the small town leveled, including the school. These were part of a major outbreak - one death was also recorded in Jackson County, and 3 more in Baxter County.
