Mother of West Memphis 3 murder victim wants piece of evidence back

(WMC-TV)- Pam Hicks, the mother of Stevie Branch, one of the three 8-year-old boys murdered in West Memphis two decades ago, has recently change her name.  She did so as she is trying to distance herself from Terry Hobbs, the man she was married to when the murders happened.

Hobbs has been mentioned by defense attorneys as a possible suspect in the murders.

Hicks is angry about recent comments made by prosecutor Scott Ellington, who is now running for Congress.

Ellington said that one reason the state did not want to retry the so-called West Memphis Three, is the cost of a new trial.

"I'm a citizen of the United States of America as well," said Hicks. "So I don't care if it cost all the money in the world. I deserve the truth and I feel like Arkansas. I'm a wounded soul from Arkansas," she added.

Hicks does not believe Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley committed the crimes. The three men were released from prison last year after pleading guilty, but professing their innocence in a deal with prosecutors.

Hicks does not believe the state is looking for other suspects and she wants her son's bicycle back, along with other items now in an evidence room at the West Memphis police department.

She wants to give the evidence to defense attorneys, saying, "I believe the defense is working, but the state, no."

Scott Ellington has to approve the release of the evidence, but Hicks says he has not returned her calls.

"What does it say to me? It's political," Hicks said. "My God, it's my life, but I get so aggravated and so hurt and frustrated."

Hicks told Action News 5 that after she talked with the West Memphis police, she feels better knowing the bicycle and the evidence are in the evidence room. She also feels it is safe and will be available if it ever needs to be tested.
