Homeland Security Grant to Fund Statewide Communications System

APRIL 16, 2004 - Posted at 7:31 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A $29 million dollar federal grant will enable law officers and emergency personnel to communicate on the same statewide wireless system.

Homeland Security Underseecretary Asa Hutchinson, a former Arkansas congressman, was in Little Rock yesterday to announce the grant.

Hutchinson says the grant is part of his agency's effort to improve emergency and law enforcement communications.  He says new technology will replace a hodgepodge of communications systems that sometimes prevents agencies from rapidly sharing information during emergencies.
