Craighead Beating Probe May be Completed Wednesday

APRIL 20, 2004 - Posted at 2:04 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR - Officials say an investigation by the Arkansas State Police and the FBI into the severe beating of a suspect in Craighead County is nearing completion.

The Jonesboro Sun cited an unnamed source who said 48-year-old Terry O'Neil of Brookland was handcuffed when he was beaten March 31 inside the Craighead County Jail.

Arkansas State Police Special Agent Phil Carter says he has interviewed more than 30 people as a part of his probe into the incident.  Carter says the probe could be complete tomorrow.

Federal and state prosecutors will review the investigation reports for possible charges.

Four jailers have been fired, but three have asked for greivance hearings.  Craighead County Judge Dale Haas says a date for the hearings will be set after the investigations are completed.
