JACKSONPORT, AR (KAIT) – An overturned tanker truck carrying fuel gnarled traffic on Hwy 69 Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Newport Police Department, Hwy 69 was closed to thru traffic from Newport at Hwy 367 to Newark at Hwy 122 until further notice as they cleared a fuel spill.
Police say the semi was a gas tanker and overturned on Highway 69 near the Jacksonport State Park entrance.
Police say the tanker was carrying around 8,500 gallons of gasoline. Hazmat and cleanup crews say the tanker is still partially full, and still needs to be drained into another tanker.
The driver of the semi had to be air lifted to the Med in Memphis, and his condition is unknown at this time.
Newport Police, Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Arkansas State Police, and multiple fire crews helped with the cleanup process.
