Franks in Searcy: Iraq Attacks Tied to U.S. Election Cycle

APRIL 23, 2004 - Posted at 7:24 a.m. CDT

SEARCY, AR - Retired Army General Tommy Franks says he expects an increase in attacks on military forces and civilians in Iraq.

Franks says the attacks will become more sophisticated and that the fighting will become more fierce as the presidential election nears.

Franks spoke at Harding University in Searcy yesterday and says series of attacks that have made April the deadliest month of the war could be tied to the U.S. election cycle.  He also says the opposition in Iraq is better organized than before.

Franks led the U.S. Central Command for three years and oversaw military operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
